6 At Home Tricks to Cure Your Cold


You feel that tickle in your throat, you’re sneezing non-stop, and you can’t wait to get home to take a nap. Sounds like you’re catching a cold. Not good. 

When you get a cold all you want to do is get better but you don’t want to leave the house. You need simple things you can do at home that will help you out with minimal effort. Lucky for you there are a number of cold-busting tricks you can do at home. 

Steam Inhalation

This is one of my favourites for fighting colds. It’s great for nasal congestion, sinus pain, and pesky coughs. Steam alone works well for dry coughs, but you can boost the bacteria fighting properties by adding eucalyptus. 

How to: fill a bowl with boiling water - make sure it’s somewhere stable - add 2-3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the bowl. Put a towel over your head and the bowl. Close your eyes and inhale deeply. Alternate breathing through your nose and mouth to help both nasal congestion and coughing.


Acupressure is a technique that applies pressure instead of needles to acupuncture points. It is a great at-home technique for all sorts of ailments. Colds often come with sinus congestion and pain. Applying pressure to select points on the face can help to encourage sinus drainage which will alleviate pressure and pain.

How to: apply pressure with the pads of your thumbs/fingers to each of the points above for 1-2min at a time. A great way to do it is sitting at a table with your elbows resting on it - use the weight of your head against your thumbs/fingers to create the pressure. 



Honey-Lemon-Ginger Tea 

If you have some honey in the cupboard and lemon and ginger in the fridge you’re in luck. All of these things are bacteria killing. They are also very soothing. This tea is a dual acting superhero - infection fighting and sore throat soothing. If you want to up the antimicrobial ante add some cayenne 

How to: to a mug of warm water add a teaspoon of unpasteurized honey, a couple slices of lemon, thinly sliced ginger and a sprinkle of cayenne. Stir it up and sip away.  


Honey-Onion Cough Syrup

Yes, you read that right - onion cough syrup. It sounds gross, it tastes a little less gross, and it works. It has only two ingredients and is quick and easy to make. Honey is effective at soothing sore throats, decreasing coughs, and killing bacteria. Onions fight infections too. They also decrease inflammation and loosen mucus.  

How to: to a small pot add ½ cup unpasteurized honey and ½ cup diced onion (red or white). Heat the pot over low until the honey has become more liquid and the onion has softened (20-30min). Strain the onions and store the remaining honey in a glass jar in the fridge. Take 1-2 tsp as needed - great before bed if you’re coughing at night.  


Contrast Showers

You’re probably not going to like this one. I’m going to tell you to have a cold shower. But bare with me. Contrast showers - as they sound, switching between hot and cold water - increase blood flow, promote detoxification, and most importantly boost the immune system. 

How to: start by showering like normal, once you’ve washed all the dirt away get ready for the contrasting. From hot you are going to move to cold (as cold as you can stand). You want to cycle between hot and cold three times. The hot phase should be twice the length of the cold phase. The bigger the contrast between the hot and the cold the bigger the effect. Make sure you always end on cold. 

Fluids & Sleep 

This is as simple as it gets. When your body is fighting an infection it needs extra fluids and extra sleep. 

How to: always have a drink by your side - water or tea or fresh juice are best. Sleep as much as you can - go to bed early, sleep in, take a nap. Simple, but critical.

Accidents happen! The reality is that over 100,000 accidents happen per year in Canada (Statistics Canada). You may ask why would one need to see a Kinesiologist? Kinesiology is the study of human movement. Often (almost always), after an accident the bodies overall movement can be limited and painful. Our goal is to get the body moving like it did prior to accident and if we’re lucky helping that body to move even better. To do this, we create Individualized programs that are tailored to your injury. This can include stretching, strengthening, active and passive range of motion, injury prevention and performance improvement. Rehabilitation exercises are crucial to effective recovery and helps you to be ready to resume work or leisure activities. Passive care feels great in the moment however, long term you need to do both passive and active rehabilitation and that's where Kinesiology comes into play to ensure

Each and every accident is different with a variety of factors that can affect the severity of the injury. The type of accident, speed one was going, if you were the driver or passenger, if the airbags went off, etc all play a role in the injury.

The most common accident we see is the rear ender. Often the injuries present themselves as whiplash from the head being jolted forward and backward in a rapid speed. This often causes neck, spine, shoulder, and chest pain. Side accidents often known as a T-bone, presents itself more commonly in the lower extremities, chest, neck, abdomen and pelvis. While,Head on collision if wearing a seatbelt often the injuries refer into the chest and lower limbs and of course the neck and spine.


At the end of the day no matter the type of accident it is a trauma the body wasn’t expecting to take that day. We look to treat your injuries no matter the severity of the accident. Every accident is unique and will need a specific treatment plan that is tailored to getting you back to where you were prior to the accident. When should you start seeing a Kinesiologist after being in car accident?

  • This will depend on your injuries, when in doubt check with your doctor. However, the earlier you start the active component of your rehab the quicker you will recover.

How often should I attend?

  • This will depend on your individualized program. Commonly you would see a kinesiologist 2-3 times a week.

Program length?

  • Depending on the severity of your injuries will determine how long you need to see your kinesiologist.

Do I have to pay?

  • No! If you have an ICBC claim they will cover 100% of each regular session and we take care of the billing side of things so you can just worry about getting back to being yourself!

Athlete of the Month: Kyle Grummett and John Matthews

Pro Motion is happy to announce our October Athlete of the Month, Kyle Grummett and John Matthews

Kyle is a very accomplished golfer in the Special Olympics program who recently won the gold medal in the top flight at the Canadian National Games in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in August, 2018.  John is the Head Coach of the golf program with the Kelowna Special Olympics local which now has almost 40 athletes at various levels of skill.  He is also Kyle’s personal caddy at provincial and national level competitions.


How did you two get your start with golf? 

Kyle: I was introduced to the game by my Dad in Estevan, Saskatchewan when I was 3 or 4 years old.

John: I started at 11 years old when my uncle introduced me to the game at his home course of Capilano Golf and Country Club in North Vancouver.

If you could golf any course in the world which one would it be and why?

Kyle: Augusta where the Master’s is played.  Just to walk over the bridge at Amen Corner would be awesome.  My second option would be Payne Stewart’s course because he is my favourite golfer.

John: St. Andrews in Scotland since it is the birthplace of the game.  

How did you meet each other? 

We met three years ago in the Kelowna Special Olympics golf program which was John’s first year as head coach.

Favourite part about competing in the Canadian National Games?

Kyle: All the people I get to meet from different parts of the country and the world.

What was the most unexpected part of the National games?

Kyle: Getting enough time to see other sports and socialize with athletes from other provinces.

Favourite olympic event other then golf?

Kyle: Basketball.  I also play this sport in the Kelowna Special Olympics program.  I really enjoy the team experience and camaraderie.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?

Kyle: Kelowna Rockets hockey and Okanagan Sun football.  Close second is fishing.

John: Golf and boating in no particular order.  I love being on the lake and on the course.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?

Kyle: Deep sea fishing, visit Australia, see The Masters in person and go to a Winnipeg Jets hockey game.  (Whoops that is 4)

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.

Kyle: I have golfed with Graham DeLaet who is a PGA golfer from Canada.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.

Kyle: It’s just a game of golf.  If you can’t shake the hand of your opponent and still be friends, you’ve missed the point. (Payne Stewart quote)
